COMDEX, LAS VEGAS, November 13, 2001-- Atheros
Communications received the 2001 Wireless LAN Award from
Andrew Seybold's Outlook4Mobility for its innovative
AR5000 chipset. The announcement was made on November 12
at Andrew Seybold's 11th Annual Wireless dinner in Las
Vegas during Fall Comdex.
Andrew Seybold's Outlook4Mobility developed an awards program this year to honor
companies that demonstrate extraordinary leadership and innovation in the
wireless industry. Atheros was honored with an award for being first to achieve
802.11a volume shipments.
"We recognized Atheros not only for its innovative wireless chipset design, but
also for the company's leadership in delivering the AR5000 to market," said
Andrew Seybold. "The emergence of next-generation wireless technology in the
industry creates new opportunities for richer multimedia and networking
applications that were previously not possible with existing wireless
technology, which lacks the faster data rate speeds and higher performance of
802.11a."
Shipping since August, the Atheros AR5000 solution provides high-speed wireless
LAN connectivity compliant with the IEEE 802.11a standard. The company's
innovative chipset architecture consists of the world's first complete 5GHz
"Radio-on-a-Chip" (RoC) and MAC/baseband processor fabricated exclusively in
standard-process digital CMOS. The chipset supports all 802.11a data rates up to
54 Mbps, and speeds up to 72 Mbps in Atheros Turbo Mode(TM).
"We are very pleased to accept this award for wireless LAN innovation," said
Mark Bercow, vice president of marketing at Atheros. "With 802.11a the industry
is moving to high-speed wireless networks that for the first time are
encroaching upon the performance capabilities of wired technologies. The coming
year should see some exciting applications in areas that people have assumed
would only become a reality far in the future."
