Atheros Names William J.
McFarland Chief Technical Officer
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 18, 2004
– Atheros Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHR), a leading developer of
advanced wireless LAN (WLAN) chipsets, today announced that William J. McFarland
has been appointed as Atheros’ vice president and chief technical officer (CTO).
McFarland joined Atheros in 1999 as senior engineer, RF systems.
McFarland was promoted to Director of Algorithms and
Architecture in 2000. In this role, he led a team developing digital signal
processing algorithms, defined radio and digital architectures, and represented
Atheros in regulatory and standardization efforts. As the newly appointed CTO,
McFarland manages a team that investigates new technologies and product
opportunities. He will help Atheros expand into new markets that take advantage
of the company’s expertise in combining complex analog and digital components.
“We are very pleased to have a world radio expert like Bill
on our team,” said Craig Barratt, president and chief executive officer of
Atheros Communications. “Bill’s appointment as vice president and CTO enables
the company to continue to deliver high performance, low-cost wireless products
to market. His deep understanding of radio technology will enable Atheros to
extend its technology leadership position in the WLAN market as well as into new
wireless technologies.”
Prior to joining Atheros Communications, McFarland spent 14
years at the Hewlett Packard
Research Lab. He designed analog ICs for high-speed digital
test equipment, fiber optic communications links, and wireless communications.
In 1993, McFarland became manager of the integrated radio research group, where
he led the creation of one of the worlds’ first integrated CMOS radios.
McFarland has published over 35 papers and holds 18 patents. McFarland received
a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1983, and a M.S. in
Electrical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, in 1985.
