SUNNYVALE, Calif., September 4, 2001--
Atheros Communications, Inc., was named by Communication Systems Design magazine to its 2001 Comet Awards listing of the industry's leading and emerging communication companies. The Communication Systems Design, editorial staff along with editors from EE Times, Embedded Systems Programming and CommsDesign.com select companies based on technological innovation, potential impact on the market and vision.
"We are very excited about receiving such a prestigious award from a respected publication like Communication Systems Design," said Rich Redelfs, president and CEO of Atheros Communications. "Being recognized for our first product and our vision of helping build a world of ubiquitous wireless connectivity is not only a strong endorsement for our company, but for the emerging wireless networking market as well."
The company's first product, the AR5000 wireless LAN chipset, provides complete wireless LAN connectivity based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) 802.11a standard. The chipset consists of two highly integrated chips featuring the world's first complete
5 GHz "Radio-on-a-Chip" (RoC) and MAC/baseband processor that are exclusively manufactured using standard-process digital CMOS technology. The AR5000 solution delivers cost-effective, robust and energy-efficient wireless connectivity with higher data rates and significantly improved system capacity over current wireless networking technologies.
"Atheros' innovative work in developing fast wireless Ethernet-like technology based on IEEE's 802.11a standard is helping to narrow the performance gap between wired and wireless networking," said Communication Systems Design's Editor-in-Chief, Rob Keenan. "As such, they are well positioned to benefit from the growing wireless networking market."
Comet Award recipients make up various segments of the communications industry including chip, board, software manufacturers, and OEM companies. 2001 Comet Award winners are posted online at www.csdmag.com.
