Brings Wireless Connectivity to Next-Generation
Entertainment-Rich Smartphones
Atheros ROCm
Technology Provides High-Performance WLAN for NVIDIA APX
2500 Development Platform Debuting at Mobile World
Congress 2008
MOBILE
WORLD CONGRESS 2008, BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 11, 2008 —
Atheros Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHR), a leading
developer of advanced wireless and wired solutions, is
demonstrating its Radio-on-Chip for Mobile (ROCm®)
family of wireless technologies, including its
industry-leading mobile WLAN solutions, its Bluetooth
for PCs and Headsets, and its new GPS product portfolio
at Mobile World Congress 2008 this week. The ROCm family
features high-performance, low-power wireless
connectivity to deliver the most satisfying end-user
experience with an array of wireless technologies.
Atheros will demonstrate its entire ROCm portfolio and
feature its AR6001 mobile WLAN implementation on the
NVIDIA APX 2500 development platform, a breakthrough
applications processor designed to enable advanced
multimedia features in a new breed of smartphones, at
Mobile World Congress 2008 in the Atheros booth (Stand
2.1F78, Hall 2-1).
Next-generation smartphones are
rapidly evolving into personal multimedia computers that
require extraordinary WLAN performance and power
efficiencies. To support this new era of mobile
computing performance, Atheros’ ROCm solutions deliver
infrastructure-class throughput while using 70 percent
less power in active mode than competing Wi-Fi products,
and near-zero (.06mW) power in standby mode.
“To deliver advanced multimedia
content and the latest Web 2.0 applications in WLAN
environments, we have integrated the Atheros AR6001 chip
into our APX 2500 development platform,” said Michael
Rayfield, general manager of the mobile business at
NVIDIA. “Next-generation smartphones will require fast,
reliable wireless connectivity to deliver engaging
content to multimedia-hungry consumers on-the-go, and
Atheros will help to deliver this experience.”
The AR6000 family of mobile WLAN
solutions consisting of 802.11g and 802.11a/g single
chip options, deliver Atheros-class Wi-Fi performance
for optimal range and throughput. This enables
smartphone manufacturers to provide high-speed
connections to any of the growing number of Wi-Fi
networks in hotspots, homes and enterprises.
“Next-generation smartphones will
enable entertainment-rich applications that Atheros’
ROCm solutions for mobile WLAN were designed to
support,” said Sam Endy, vice president and general
manager of the mobile wireless business unit for
Atheros. “Our ROCm family features the industry’s lowest
power consumption along with the highest throughput for
mobile WLAN, extending battery life and increasing the
number of downloads and amount of talk time between
charges in a new class of mobile devices.”
The integration of Atheros’ AR6000
solutions into the APX 2500 platform allows mobile phone
designers to leverage a complete, turnkey design that
enables the fastest time-to-market for cutting edge
multimedia smartphones. Atheros ROCm designs provide
full driver support for Microsoft’s® Windows® Embedded
CE 6.0. Along with support for Linux®-based solutions,
Atheros’ mobile WLAN technology offers significant
market advantages to accelerate design cycles.
