Atheros is Finalist for Prestigious Technical Excellence Award

SUNNYVALE, Calif., November 9, 2001-- Atheros Communications announced its AR5000 WLAN chipset has been selected as a finalist in the Networking category for PC Magazine's annual "Technical Excellence" awards. Award winners will be announced at COMDEX Fall in Las Vegas on Monday, November 12.

The Atheros AR5000 solution is the industry's first production chipset based on the IEEE 802.11a standard. Incorporating a complete 5GHz "Radio-on-a-Chip" (RoC) and integrated MAC/baseband processor, the AR5000 delivers unprecedented WLAN performance. The chipset supports all 802.11a data rates up to 54 megabits per second (Mbps), as well as higher Atheros Turbo Mode(TM) rates.

"It is extremely rewarding to have a publication like PC Magazine honor our technology," said Cheryl Patstone, director of Corporate Marketing at Atheros. "All of us are in this business with the hope that what we do will have a major impact in our industry and in the day-to-day lives of people all over the world. Certainly our chipset, the world's first of its kind, promises a new era of high-speed wireless LAN connectivity in the home, office and public places."

The PC Magazine Technical Excellence Awards were launched at Spring Comdex in 1985. They are nominated and voted on by the magazine's editors, senior contributors, and PC Magazine Labs staff, who are judging the most innovative products that demonstrate technological breakthroughs. 2001 award winners are chosen from hundreds of products that are shipped in the twelve-month period ending September 30.

PC Magazine is written primarily for business users and purchasers of personal computing technology. PC Magazine is a comprehensive source of information for PC products currently available. Its comparative, category-wide reviews are the results of some of the most extensive laboratory testing in the industry.
