Advanced WLAN Chipsets from Atheros Communications Are Integrated in New Mobile Computers from Sony

Atheros Super G®, Super AG®  technology for high-performance wireless networking will be featured in new Sony VAIO® PCs

SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 12, 2004— Atheros Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATHR), a leading developer of advanced wireless LAN (WLAN) chipsets, today announced that Atheros 802.11b/g or 802.11a/b/g WLAN technology will be adopted into eleven new Sony VAIO® PCs, to be shipped mainly to the Japan market. Atheros' advanced silicon solutions and Super G® and Super AG® feature sets offer the world's highest performance wireless networking capabilities, as measured by throughput and range.

Atheros WLAN chipsets are integrated in the following new VAIO PCs that will be shipped mainly to the Japan market: VAIO type E Series (VGN-E70B/S, VGN-E70B/B, VGN-E50B/S, VGN-E50B/D, and VGN-E50B/B), VAIO type A Series (VGN-A70P), VAIO type TR Series (PCG-TR5B, PCG-TR5PS, and PCG-TR5S), and VAIO type U Series (VGN-U50 and VGN-U70P).

“Super G technology lets users take immediate advantage of the industry’s premier solution for high-throughput 802.11g wireless LANs,” said Craig Barratt, president and chief executive officer of Atheros. “The popularity of Atheros Super G-enabled access points and routers in Japan makes this capability all the more valuable.”

About Super G and Super AG® Technology

Atheros Super G and Super AG® technology employs innovative performance-enhancement features—including packet bursting, fast frames, and data compression—that improve the throughput and range of wireless networking products. The technology delivers user link rates up to two times faster than standard 802.11g or 802.11a/g products while preserving full compatibility with standard IEEE 802.11g or 802.11a/g networks. Super G and Super AG® support up to 54 Mbps data rates for users in Japan, with typical end-user throughputs as high as 40 Mbps. Outside Japan, with an additional dynamic turbo mode activated, the technology can achieve throughputs of more than 60 Mbps for typical data. This is the highest throughput performance available on the market today.
