TOKYO, JAPAN, June 27, 2002 – TELEC, the official
Japanese certification agency that tests and approves wireless technologies for
the Japanese market, has approved the Atheros combo wireless LAN reference
design. The reference design is the first IEEE 802.11a/g/b standards-based
solution to be approved by TELEC.
The approval allows indoor operation of IEEE 802.11a in the
5-GHz band, and indoor or outdoor operation of 802.11b and 802.11g (draft) in
the 2.4-GHz band. This enables
seamless roaming, for example from an indoor 802.11a office network to an
802.11b outdoor “hot spot.”
“People are eager for combination wireless LAN solutions
that will enable them to connect everywhere,” said Dr. Tomoki Ohsawa, general
manager of Atheros Communications KK. “With
TELEC approval achieved, product availability in Japan is now right around the
corner.”
The newly approved reference design is based on the
award-winning AR5001X, the industry’s first dual-band (5-GHz and 2.4-GHz)
wireless LAN chipset. The AR5001X supports all of the important standards for
current and future wireless networks: the 54 Mbps 5-GHz 802.11a standard, the
11Mbps 2.4-GHz 802.11b standard, and the OFDM enhancement for 2.4-GHz in the
draft 802.11g standard. The chipset also integrates an encryption engine to
deliver the industry’s most comprehensive WLAN security with no performance
degradation.
