Atheros Boosts WLAN Security with Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) Support

New and Existing Products Based on Atheros’ Industry-Leading Chipsets Support WPA and Integrated AES Functionality

SUNNYVALE, Calif., October 31, 2002—  Atheros today announced its support for the new security standard named Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), which was introduced earlier today by the Wi-Fi Alliance. WPA-based security solutions upgrade the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) technology in legacy wireless LAN products. Atheros is providing an upgrade for existing products that are based on Atheros’ award-winning chips and will integrate WPA capabilities into all future products.

Wireless LANs that use WPA provide better security than those using WEP. WPA combines TKIP encryption, an upgrade to WEP encryption, along with the latest authentication measures approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Atheros is also integrating WPA with even stronger encryption via the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) for enterprise and government level security.

“Security is a fundamental concern for both enterprises and consumers deploying wireless networks,” said Rich Redelfs, president and chief executive officer of Atheros. “We are committed to providing the industry’s most advanced security solutions, ranging from WPA support and AES encryption to the use of virtual LANs to segment multiple classes of users. Atheros will continue to provide flexibility and ease-of-use to end-users by seamlessly supporting all major security and wireless standards via our SmartSelectTM technology."

In March, Atheros introduced the industry’s most comprehensive security solutions including AES encryption, 802.1x authentication, Virtual Private Network (VPN) and 802.1q Virtual LAN (VLAN) support. (For more information, see http://www.atheros.com/news/flagship.html). Recently Atheros made another security-related announcement about its support for Cisco’s LEAP authentication (see http://www.atheros.com/news/leap.html). These features are integrated into all of Atheros’ second-generation chipset solutions including the 802.11a/g/b dual-band solution, the enhanced 802.11a solution, and the integrated access point chipset solution. All of these products are currently shipping in volume and are available from over 35 leading manufacturers in the retail and OEM markets.
