Qualcomm Atheros PON Technology

Qualcomm Atheros’ high-performance passive optical network (PON) technologies address the increasing bandwidth requirements of delivering multimedia and IPTV content to the home and multi-dwelling units. With our Gigabit-speed EPON (Ethernet PON) solutions, our carrier customers may deploy next-generation, fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband access with the OLT (optical line terminal) for networking from the central office, and the full-featured ONU (optical network unit) system-on-chip for implementation in home gateways.

End-to-end gateway solutions

Qualcomm Atheros is providing end-to-end gateway solutions, including the PON ONU system-on-chip for access to the wide area network (WAN) and WLAN, PLC and Ethernet solutions for local area network (LAN) connectivity throughout the home. By leveraging our portfolio of Ethernet, Wi-Fi® and Powerline solutions, Qualcomm Atheros’ unique WAN-to-LAN platform not only delivers Gigabit speed, next-generation optical broadband access to the home, but also enables intelligent routing and broadband sharing throughout the home.

Value-Added Compliance Highlights

Qualcomm Atheros PON solutions support a variety of mandatory as well as optional specifications for next-generation broadband networking, including support for the:

  • Mandatory IEEE 802.3ah PON 1G networking standard and the optional China Telecom (CTC) standard for layers 3 through 7.
  • Multiple-channel, software-based, digital signal processing for G.711 and G.729 ITU standards for VoIP
  • TR-156 (Broadband Forum PON standard), comprehensive virtual LAN (VLAN) to ease management, and processing and traffic management for PON and UNI interfaces.
